The iconic metal rivets on each of Hammitt’s supple leather handbags create a classic silhouette that is coveted by collectors. Edgy, stylish and beautiful, each Hammitt Bag has the functionality and practicality of its tom-boy designer, who refused to carry a purse for most of her life.
Originally created by Los Angeles native Stephenie Hammitt, Hollywood spotters have seen Hammitt bags worn by celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Jane Quimby and Angelina Jolie. You can also see them on the set of Gossip Girl, 90210, Entourage and most recently, True Blood.
Intrigued? Here are a few things you need to know about starting your own Hammitt collection:
A former English teacher, Stephenie created her first bag out of necessity, when she simply needed a place to carry her tampons while she went to a friend’s backyard barbeque.
That same clutch is one of her most popular selling items. Today, with function still built into each bag, Stephenie works with customers to ensure every pocket, zipper and nook-and-cranny can hold the essential items women need today – whether it’s the favorite tube of lipstick, the phone, wallet or sunglasses.
Truly an American brand, Hammitt builds each new bag around popular parts of Los Angeles, with names that include Westwood, Brentwood and LAX.
The company’s CEO, Tony Drockton, is a Cleveland, Ohio, native, who has been influential in leading the brand to its prominence in exclusive boutiques around the world. He fell in love with Hammitt, because he wanted to spend time working for a company that “made something beautiful that people would appreciate.” Soon, Drockton began making all of the major business decisions about the company, moving Hammitt beyond its LA roots to a national brand. As a result, Stephenie has taken a back seat role, with an interest in the company, working with the five-person design team to create new styles.
If you’re a True Blood fan, some of the Hammitt bags may look familiar. Hammitt worked with the producers to create signature Hammitt bags for specific characters:
Is Hammitt For You?
In Drockton’s own words, “A Hammitt is not for a reason or a season, they are for a lifetime.” He says that Hammitt bags are created for an “educated, sophisticated woman living a casual lifestyle, he said. “A Hammitt woman knows what she wants and doesn’t need to flash the label around town.”
